3D Printed Assistive Technology Gets User Briefs
3D printed assistive technology just got a to-do list with names on it. On September 16, 2026, Bambu Lab and seven accessibility organizations launched Make for Good on MakerWorld: 24 briefs from people who already drop keys, miss a second sock, or cannot pinch a toothbrush, with two months to submit and one month of partner testing. If you keep a desktop printer, this is a job for a specific hand, foot, or wheelchair — not another display model.

Bambu Lab’s September 16 PR Newswire release is the source for the contest structure and partner claims that follow. Engineering.com’s September 18 report restated the same window: September through December 2026, 24 briefs, two months to submit, then a month of testing with the people named in those briefs. The files live on MakerWorld’s contest page.
The briefs are not hypothetical. Jessica Cox, founder of Rightfooted Foundation International, was born without arms and uses her feet. She can pull on a first sock; the second sock loses the friction she needs once one foot is covered. She can scoop her service dog’s waste and then has no clean way to carry the bag. Fastening a bike helmet still means sitting on the floor and lining up two buckle halves by feel. Rancho Los Amigos’ Emerging Tech Lab added reachers that do not require a squeeze grip, and wheelchair storage for phones and keys. Ayúdame3D asked for a toothbrush that is not pinched and a one-handed ponytail tool. e-NABLE France asked for a one-hand kitchen toolkit. Makers Making Change asked for a knitting-needle support, a guitar pick that stays with limited grip, and a marker-cap aid. PrintLab asked for a tabletop game a child with cerebral palsy can play with friends. MakeGood asked for a pickleball paddle holder for weakened hand-arm musculature.
Each partner owns a slice. Ayúdame3D says it has distributed more than 1,000 free “trésdesis” arms in 70 countries since 2017. e-NABLE France says its 450-plus volunteers have fitted more than 200 3D-printed hands. MakeGood points to the Toddler Mobility Trainer, a fully 3D-printed wheelchair for young children. Makers Making Change says it has delivered more than 30,000 devices with help from about 40,000 volunteers, and that winning designs may enter its open-source library. Those counts are the organizations’ claims, not an audit here. Selected files, Bambu says, will go into open libraries and volunteer networks that already deliver devices in more than 70 countries.
Why 3D Printed Assistive Technology Matters for Makers
A parked CoreXY can already print a phone stand. This contest asks for the missing piece a named person needs this week: the second sock, the buckle, the paddle that does not slip. Fit, grip, and whether the part survives a door or a gym bag sit above surface finish. Qianye, listed as Creator Operation at MakerWorld, put it this way in the release: the users are not hypothetical, and the question is whether you can print the missing piece so that person does not have to ask.
The practical split on a garage desk is load, not brand. A marker-cap aid and a toothbrush grip are small FFF jobs. A wheelchair lock, a mountable brake, or a reacher that has to pick something off the floor is a structural job. Research already on the shelf shows both ends: custom joysticks that matched one person’s remaining hand, and a fully printed wheelchair accessory that had to push a door. A contest win is not a 510(k). It is a file that partners say they will print, test, and — if it holds up — share.
How 3D Printed Assistive Technology Briefs Break Down
- Dressing and hygiene. Second sock, one-handed ponytail, toothbrush that is not pinched, shower and hair-care aid, toothpaste squeezer. These are contact parts. Design for washable filament and no sharp interior corners that trap soap.
- Kitchen and classroom. One-hand kitchen toolkit, marker-cap aid, knitting-needle support. Think about which hand is free, whether the tool can live on a counter, and whether a teacher can use it without a second person.
- Mobility hardware. Wheelchair storage, floor brake, descent control, anti-roll lock, mechanical reacher, door-knob turner. These see real force. Abdullah and Shaikh Mohammed’s fully printed accessory was tested against a door at about 25 N and an obstacle at about 50 N — on an unoccupied chair, not a clinical trial (Abdullah & Shaikh Mohammed, 2023).
- Sport and play. Pickleball paddle holder, basketball aid, tabletop game that looks like a game, guitar pick, bike-helmet buckle. PrintLab’s brief is explicit: it should not look like therapy equipment.
- What the contest is not. It does not require a Bambu machine. It is not a clearance pathway. Shin and colleagues printed custom joysticks for four people with severe quadriplegia and measured indoor driving after two weeks — a pilot, not a population study (Shin et al., 2021).
What the Research Says
Shin, Ahn, Lee, Yang, and colleagues 3D-printed customized power-wheelchair joysticks for four people with severe quadriplegia whose stock sticks did not match their remaining hand function. After two weeks they scored a modified indoor driving assessment, NASA-TLX workload, and a Korean PIADS. Patients 1–3 were already at the top of the modified PIDA scale. Patient 4’s mean PIDA score rose from 3.33 to 4. All four posted lower PIDA times, and NASA-TLX and PIADS pointed to higher satisfaction. That is a four-person pilot, not a claim that any MakerWorld file will drive a chair (Shin et al., 2021).
Abdullah and Shaikh Mohammed printed a wheelchair accessory that has to push a door or glide along an obstacle, entirely in ABS at 10% infill, in sections. Finite-element checks stayed below the ABS break strength they used. On an unoccupied powered chair, the prototype opened a door at about 25 N and pushed or glided against an obstacle at about 50 N. They call it, to their knowledge, the first fully 3D-printed accessory in that class, and say end-user tests are still ahead (Abdullah & Shaikh Mohammed, 2023). A MakerWorld brief for wheelchair hardware should be read against that bar: print it, load it, then talk to the person who will live with it.
